Description

Raw Meat and the Vegetarian’s Nightmare

Raw is probably the number-one film about vegetarianism and one of the best-known art-house horror films out there. And it fully earns that status. This is top-tier horror — not pretentious crap hoisted onto a pedestal for reasons unknown.

Have you ever tried to feed a vegetarian meat? I have. And it ended badly for me. I became a vegetarian myself. Perhaps some higher power punished me for wanting to feed my friend a soup made with meat broth. But don’t worry: my friend saw through my lie and didn’t eat the soup. And eight years later the higher power forgave me, and I eat meat again.

No, nobody forced me to eat meat — unlike Justine, the protagonist of Raw.
It happened when I was out of town, surrounded by mountains and clean air. It wasn’t by chance. Psychologically, I was ready for it, since I knew the picnic would involve meat. And from old memory, I was very fond of homemade fried chicken.

In the first days after the long break, I pounced on the meat just like Justine, and I wanted more and more. Though, of course, you’d better not do that after years of a vegetarian diet.

Luckily, in my case the meat was well done. And yes, it was delicious. There was plenty of meat, and I wanted more and more.
So to some extent I can even understand Justine.
When I got back home, the euphoria faded, and now I don’t feel any craving or particular love for meat.

I’ve written more about my vegetarian journey on the Meat Kills page.
