Description

Obsession — picture this: you’re getting ready for work in the morning, your girlfriend packed you a lunch and smiles as she walks you to the door.
You come home in the evening, open the door, and she’s standing in the exact same spot, covered in piss and her own vomit, wearing that exact same smile.

A shy guy named Bear makes a wish for the girl he’s in love with to fall for him, just so he doesn’t have to go through the agonizing process of actually confessing his feelings.

Have you ever had a friend who was fucking the girl you’re in love with, while simultaneously giving you advice on how to confess your feelings to her?

Obsession — those intrusive, terrifying, and deeply unpleasant thoughts, images, and urges that hijack your mind completely against your will.

The first thirty minutes of this movie felt like a massive deja vu. So many memories of missed opportunities. What an idiot I was.
Fortunately, I’ve changed since then (I hope… no, I definitely changed). It’s no longer a struggle for me to approach a girl I like. The main thing is, I believe it myself.

One day, I finally gathered my courage and approached her. Yeah, it didn’t work out. But the very fact that I did it… And nothing bad happened to me afterward. It gave me confidence and the realization that there’s nothing scary about approaching a stranger. Turns out, they don’t bite. Well, not all of them, anyway.

But before that, I used to dream so many times that the girl I liked would just make the first move, let me know she was into me, and save me from having to go through the ordeal of confessing my feelings.

Yeah, I was exactly like Bear. And man, it feels so good to say that in the past tense.
It was agonizing to watch his indecision for the first thirty minutes. I was literally looking at my own reflection. Feeling that same awkwardness, shame, and horror of my past helplessness.
Fortunately, our life paths diverge after that.

Throughout the movie, the director masterfully builds dread using unconventional camera angles, unsettling sounds, or dead silence in moments where you have no idea what to expect. The scenes with the girl in the dark are especially memorable. Usually, directors hide monsters and supernatural entities in the dark, but in this case, it’s just a girl standing there. You see her silhouette, but her face is obscured, or her eyes are glowing in the dark while she’s having a conversation. It looks incredibly creepy and makes you squint at the screen, trying to figure out if her face is actually okay. At one point, this specific kind of dread reminded me of the horror movie Smile.

Obsession is a horror film by YouTube creator Curry Barker, the mind behind the viral horror short The Chair.
Curry Barker proved that with $750,000, you can shoot a damn good movie that looks like it cost over $10 million.
