VFW

Year: 2019 Runtime: 92 min. Director: Joe Begos Country: United States

Description

VFW — the veterans of foreign wars — and of the VHS era — are back.
Aside from Stephen Lang, who rose to fame after the release of James Cameron’s Avatar, the rest of the cast looks as if it was teleported straight out of the ’80s. You’ve seen their faces countless times but never knew their names. Decades later, they’ve returned to remind you of themselves.

Relive the good old days — and you don’t even need to dig out your old VCR, the one your mom, by a happy accident, still hasn’t thrown away. Let the flat screen of your TV and your high-speed internet bring back the long-forgotten feeling you used to get watching B-movies.
This time, VFW (films, that is) must withstand a siege and fight off a local gang.

The “siege” is a film subgenre in which the protagonists, having barricaded themselves inside a building, are forced to fight off the attackers. The same subgenre includes John Carpenter’s original Assault on Precinct 13, its remake with Ethan Hawke, and Hostage with Bruce Willis. I really love the latter two.

Later I’ll put together a collection of films in this subgenre.
