Description

The Dark is a small, independent, well-crafted horror film. And I really love small, yet independent, well-crafted horror films. On tight budgets, they try to squeeze every drop out of the resources they have. And, as practice shows, what matters most is the idea and the creators’ passion, not the number on a budget sheet.

Such films are often intimate, with minimal locations, focusing on atmosphere and emotional depth. Among them, you sometimes find real gems: plots that stick with you for years, and movies you genuinely want to revisit later on. You can feel that the filmmakers poured their souls into them, without a squad of marketers standing behind the director telling him how to shoot.
Sometimes a single scene will randomly pop into your head, and you’ll frantically try to remember the title.

The Dark opens with a guy (possibly a pedophile) driving with a boy in the trunk of his car. Nothing but forest for miles. It seems like there’s no one to call for help. But suddenly, help arrives…

⚠️ Spoiler warning! Stop reading here if you don’t want to know what I think is a brilliant plot twist. You’ve been warned. Now I’ll continue.
…help arrives in the form of a zombie. A girl zombie, roughly his age. Her stepfather recently killed her.

It already sounds impressive, doesn’t it? A house in the woods, a maniac, a victim, and a zombie. What else do you need for a great film? In this case, I’d say nothing. In my opinion, it’s already perfect.
The zombie here plays a completely different role. She’s also a victim, but one who managed to escape, fight back, and survive, in a sense. She was literally in that boy’s shoes not long ago.

Enjoy the film. I hope you like The Dark.

The Dark is awesome. I know, it sounds pretty ambiguous. But the dark isn’t necessarily evil. For instance, I love dark-colored bedsheets. And I assure you, they aren’t evil at all—just very soft and pleasant to the touch. Remember Batman’s suits? And his Batmobiles—they’re black too. Maybe your inner voice just whispered: “All of that’s just to hide in the dark easier.” Maybe. And in that case, the dark serves the good of Gotham’s citizens. It’s merely a tool in someone’s hands. As for my dark bedsheets? They serve me faithfully, asking for nothing in return except an occasional wash.
