Description

Saloum is a unique supernatural action film from the African country of Senegal. I can say with confidence that you’ve never seen anything like it. The visual style, direction, plot — everything is executed perfectly.
In spirit, the film is closer to traditional horror than arthouse horror, but it’s too unique, in my opinion, to sit in the section with conventional films.

Later, I watched another film by this director — featuring Asia Argento, daughter of Dario Argento (the Italian maestro of B-horror who created confusion around Zombie 2). But that’s a story for another time.

So, I watched this new work by Jean-Luc Herbulot, and the film was disgusting. I’m telling you this in case you enjoy Saloum and decide to explore the director’s other works. Herbulot also has a supernatural miniseries, Sakho & Mangane, starring the lead actor from Saloum. Seems like a quality series, though.
I’ve written a lot of text and said nothing about the plot of this Senegalese gem. Yes, I can do that.

The story follows three criminals who must cross the African desert to reach the border. The film perfectly blends elements of comedy with thriller and action with the supernatural. The humour is woven in skillfully without turning the film into a comedy. I think it’s really cool when directors manage to pull this off.
Enjoy the show.
