Why I Love “Honeydew“
I also love getting back to nature: camping by the sea, in the mountains, or deep in the woods. But sometimes, a peaceful retreat away from civilization can be easily ruined. In my case, it was just a few offhand remarks made by a friend.

For example: “Make sure you zip up your tent, or a centipede might crawl in. Oh, they’re around here. If it bites you, you’ll have to trek a few kilometers along the shore, under a sheer cliff, over boulders to the first aid station, and the hospital is even further. And that’s if the tide isn’t in.”

You’re not supposed to kill centipedes, because each one has its own territory: kill one, and another will crawl in. Plus, it’s not that easy to kill them anyway because of their tough exoskeleton (unless you use a shovel), but as I said, there’s no point. There are wolves around here, too. And yesterday, after a heavy downpour, the surge from the mountain river washed a few tents out to sea.

After hearing all that, you think, “What the hell am I doing here? Tomorrow morning, at first light, I’m driving home.” But then morning comes. Having fought off the paranoia that the mountain river would overflow again and wash my tent away, I think I actually managed to get a little sleep and hear the cicadas crying in the night.

I gave myself a little more time to adapt, and ended up spending a whole week in this wild place, where you have a small mountain river, a forest, and the sea. It’s a rare and perfect combination. I didn’t even want to leave. But I still prefer glamping.

Yeah, this time it was without any otherworldly creatures. And no one tried to crawl into my tent, either. However, I kept thinking I heard footsteps nearby. But every time I jumped out of the tent in the middle of the night to face off against some ill-wishers or evil entities, it always turned out to be my friends, who just wanted a midnight snack.

But for the guy (played by Steven Spielberg’s son) and the girl in Honeydew, who decided to spend the night in a tent, their nature retreat was ruined by a creepy old couple.

I really loved Honeydew. So much so that its plot stuck with me for a long time. And I absolutely disagree with its ridiculously low rating.
