Description

Hope for a bright future? Hope for survival? Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Hope is the new film by Na Hong-jin, director of the brilliant The Wailing. Luckily, I didn’t watch The Wailing back in 2016, but just a few years ago, so I didn’t have to wait a decade for his next project.

The trailer channels the best of Jordan Peele: cool, stylish, completely opaque, and deeply intriguing. You’d think we’re past being surprised by this, but then the end credits roll, and here’s the kicker: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and that super beautiful girl named Jung Ho-yeon from Squid Game. After just one role, she has ten times more social media followers than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I’d be pretty salty if I were Arnold. Fifty years in the industry, a bodybuilding career, the lead role in Terminator 2: Judgment Day — one of the greatest films in cinematic history — millions of fans worldwide, Governor of California, and a pivot to climate activism. And yet, it all gets overshadowed by a single supporting role in a hype-driven series. 😄

But let’s get back to Hope. Judging by the trailer, hostile aliens have decided to wipe out Earth again. It occasionally echoes A Quiet Place: monsters, untamed nature, and a suffocating atmosphere. That’s all the info we have so far for a film that’s landed in the main competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.

We can’t wait.
