Gannibal
Description
The Japanese horror series Gannibal (2022—2025 ) — has nothing to do with Hannibal Lecter or The Silence of the Lambs franchise. The only connection is the theme of cannibalism.
A new police officer arrives in a small village with his wife and daughter. The previous officer was killed by someone local, and the entire village helped cover it up — making it look like he got addicted to gambling, fell into debt, and eventually disappeared. Case closed.
Upon arrival, the locals look suspiciously friendly — something that will immediately make any seasoned cinephile think something’s off. But the series quickly diverts attention elsewhere, focusing on a suspicious isolated family. Eventually, you forget about your suspicions regarding the villagers, and we see the new officer’s struggle with this family — reminiscent of the Bakers from Resident Evil 7. They even have an unkillable cannibal grandpa.
I tried not to spoil anything — just described some events from the first episode.
I really enjoyed this series. No plot bloat, no clichés, no predictability. I watched 5 episodes in one evening and saved the last two for the next day. Good news: there’s a second season of Gannibal, and apparently, a third is in production.
Before watching, I needed to know if there were supernatural elements. The internet didn’t answer my question. But after watching myself, I can say for sure: yes, there’s supernatural stuff, but it’s not the main evil — maybe more will be revealed later.
I think this series will appeal to fans of the stunning Korean horror film The Wailing. If you haven’t seen it, highly recommended.
Enjoy the show!
