Description

The Piper didn’t curse anyone, and he didn’t want to kill anyone either — he just wanted to heal his son.
After watching the brilliant The Wailing, I’m no longer surprised by the kind, slightly comedic beginnings of Korean horror films. So I was almost sure that The Piper would at some point reincarnate into something dark and depressive, and a happy ending was unlikely.

I liked the film, but I got the impression that it suffered heavily during editing, since some remaining questions were left unanswered. And no, this isn’t that intentional ambiguity often exploited in auteur and arthouse horror films. It looks more like plot holes. But that’s no reason not to watch The Piper; on the contrary, I highly recommend it.

The Piper is an excellent illustration of how one person, endowed with a little power, can manipulate the majority’s opinion, distort reality, and force society to resort to violence against innocent people. Nothing is true, everything is permitted, for the sake of preserving one’s own power.
