Description

The Painted Bird — War is not epic battles beautifully shot in big-budget films, where tragedy is diluted by political intrigue, patriotic propaganda, and spy games.

War is destroyed human lives, violence, suffering, and pain.
This social horror thriller is based on Jerzy Kosiński’s scandalous novel of the same name and follows a boy’s journey through Eastern Europe during World War II.

⚠️ CONTENT WARNING:
This film contains graphic depictions of violence, sexual assault, animal cruelty, and child endangerment. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Films that show such horrors of war can be counted on one hand. Among them are Man Behind the Sun and Come and See — the latter being director Václav Marhoul’s main inspiration. To make sure nobody missed the reference, he even cast Aleksey Kravchenko, the lead actor from Come and See, in a cameo role.

The film also features many renowned character actors: Udo Kier, Harvey Keitel, Julian Sands, Barry Pepper, and Stellan Skarsgård. Some of them worked for almost free due to the limited budget and studios’ unwillingness to finance this film.

The Painted Bird is not for the faint of heart. But films like this need to be seen — so we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past and understand the true cost of what’s happening in the world.

Language experiment: The film uses a specially created Inter-Slavic language to avoid tying the story to a specific country.

Filming locations: Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

Visual: Shot on 35mm black-and-white film — obviously to emphasize the bleak and oppressive atmosphere.

Title meaning: Refers to a scene where a bird catcher paints a bird and releases it into a flock, which immediately pecks the outsider to death — an allegory for the protagonist’s fate among people.
