Enys Men

Year: 2022 Runtime: 96 min. Director: Mark Jenkin Country: United Kingdom

Description

The events unfold in 1973 on a deserted island off the coast of Cornwall. Enys Men translates from Cornish as Stone Island.
This slow-burn arthouse horror follows a female volunteer who daily monitors a rare flower growing on a cliff. It seems to be driving her mad. Her life gradually turns into a metaphysical nightmare where the boundaries between past, present, dream, and reality completely blur.

The film was shot on 16mm film using post-sync sound, creating the atmosphere of found old footage.

This piece of elevated horror comes from NEON. Yeah, that’s the same studio that releases tedious, high-intellectual horrors that are often so smart they’re impossible to watch. Although, maybe I’m the only fool here? You’re not supposed to watch them; you’re supposed to collect them like art pieces. Which is basically what I do: I collect all sorts of unwatchable junk and pretentious crap, and then recommend you watch it. (Just kidding… mostly).

Well, if we’re being slightly more serious, as you’ve probably guessed, this is cinema for true art connoisseurs who can dissect every frame and write a dissertation on it. (Just kidding).

But if we’re being even more serious, the film is aimed at lovers of slow, atmospheric cinema and folk horror in the vein of The Wicker Man, where jump scares matter less than the oppressive feeling of isolation. If you’re looking for films like Midsommar and The Witch, and if you like arthouse horror like that from A24, then you should definitely give Enys Men a watch.
