Dead Lover is a campy horror-comedy shot on 16mm film, blending German Expressionism with theatrical grotesque. At least, that’s how critics would phrase it.

But I’m not a critic, so I’ll keep it simple: this is an experimental film stitched together from visual references across decades. You’ll spot techniques from the ’80s, the ’70s, and even a trace of silent cinema. It’s a 100% auteur project, made for a narrow circle of cinephiles who seek out the strange and unconventional—and who simply don’t care for mainstream formulas or expensive, hollow pretension.

This is the directorial debut of Grace Glowicki (you might remember her from Honey Bunch), who not only helmed this wild experiment but also stars in one of the lead roles. Dead Lover tells a strange tale of love, scent, and the attempt to resurrect the impossible—all delivered through farce, a black-and-red palette, and deliberately cheap theatricality.
