Description
The Wait (La espera) says that taking bribes is bad, offering them is even worse. Both breed corruption, which eventually leads to inequality, oppression of some, and privilege for others — and from there, dictatorship is just a step away.
In the film, corruption led to personal tragedy and supernatural intervention. Which can be interpreted as: you should fear not only someone finding out the truth, reporting you, and facing a corrupt judge — only to walk away clean. You can’t bribe the supernatural — you’ll have to pay a high price.
The Wait won 29 awards and received 33 nominations at various film festivals.
Spain’s official submission for the Academy Awards 2025 in the category “Best International Feature Film”.
